Project - Building a School and Community Website
In this project the participants will start building a simple but complete website using WordPress the most popular web publishing platform in the world. We start where we left of in the previous basic activity of building a basic website and we now aim to build a much more complete School and Community website. If you feel courageous and want to do another type of website (like a Sports only website or a small online local craft website and store) you can too. The steps will be familiar but its easier if you follow an example the first time you do it. Here we will follow the example we have seen already from Sir Dudley Tuti College in Isabel Solomon Islands.
Planning Session
Before you start your website you should always plan. Here are some basic question you should try to answer. Create a word document or write it down on a piece of paper- What am I going to do with this?
- Who is going to read this?
- What kinds of information will I be posting?
- Why am I doing this?
- Who am I doing this for?
- How often am I going to be posting and adding information?
Don't forget to take inspiration from the example website above. Or other websites if you feel adventurous.
Static Content
On a website, there are pages are don't change much. They are normally categorised as static content. Example of static content are:
- An about page
- A contact page
- A page showing staff with their biography
It does not mean the static content will never change, you can go back and edit mistakes and add new things. Start thinking about what static content you will include. Go back to your website and start creating your static content. The browser URL are https://yourusername.wordpress.com and https://yourusername.wordpress.com/wp-admin if you forgot.
- Create at least 3 static pages (use the example above if not sure).
- Polish your pages with media. For example you may want to add images.
Dynamic Content
Some content will be categorised dynamic by nature. This means there will be constantly new pages added. Example of dynamic content could be:- News section (new articles added every week)
- Student Essay section (student posting their writing essays online so other can read and learn more)
- Comments section (You could add a comments section too where people can add comment about some other content)
- Sports results (put up results of sport after each game)
Start thinking about the dynamic content your website will have. Typically dynamic content would be "Categorised" in a websites.
- Create at least 1 category (e.g. News).
- Create at least 3 new posts (e.g. News article 1, News article 2, News article 3).
- Add these 3 new posts to the category you created in step in. The post can be added to the category from within the post edit view.
- Create a new menu or use the one your created previously. Add your static pages and your category to it. Browse your website to observe the changes.
Customize your Theme
TODO complete developing this. Some of this may need to be included in presentation before project
Notes:
- Use the PasiMA FB pages to explain Facebook and differentiate Facebook Groups and Pages
- Explain how Wordpress and Facebook can be interconnected
- Explain why this is important and the implications (opportunities and administrative implications)
- Using the Sir Dudley Tuti site, briefly demonstrate how it works
- Show how to connect them using control panel
- Exercise: Anyone with FB account can join the example FB group. Then post something on the Wordpress site and FB group can comment etc.
